History of the Pledge of Allegiance:
This was the Pledge of Allegiance between 1924 and 1954.
In 1892 Baptist minister Francis Bellamy originally wrote the Pledge in hopes that any nation could use it:
"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Then in 1924, at the first National Flag convention, the US altered it to read "Flag of the United States of America", so those wanting to become citizens would clearly understand they were pledging to this country and not theirs.
In 1954, Congress passed law that "under God" should be inserted, though it went against the 1st Amendment and the Founding Fathers being adamant about separation of Church and State.
