Description
A blue rowboat with an uncertain future as a horrific storm builds and waves roll into the black sand beach of Vernazza, Italy. On October 25, 2011, Cinque Terre's 5 beautiful villages were hit by a devastating storm that sent walls of water, debris, and vehicles rushing down the mountains into their harbors. 10 people lost their lives in that horrific storm....
The morning of the storm, I went down to the harbor just before dawn. I could hear the waves crashing out in the Mediterranean Sea and the howling wind was strong. I took some night shots of the Vernazza Architecture and walked down to the pier's end just before daybreak. The intensity of the storm building gave me pause and a sense of dread.
After capturing images of the angry Sea, I set up in a different spot, only this time as I was composing my shot all I saw was water. Quickly I grabbed my tripod/camera and jumped back just in time. Water rolled over my boots as I watched the large wave break into the pier and rocks to the right. Whew, that was too close for comfort!
My sense of dread intensified and while starting back to my rented apartment, a fisherman told me to get to safety in Italian. That's what I think he said; my Italian was minimal at best. On the way back I saw this lone blue rowboat on the once black sand beach and since it was a safe distance away from the Sea, I stopped to capture a few shots.
I will never forget this morning and what it brought later that day. I left 5 hrs earlier than planned and while walking up the steep mountain street to my rental car, it began to sprinkle. By the time I reached the top of the mountain, I was only able to get about 5 shots when the skies opened up with a torrential rain. The rain never gave up the entire 5 hour drive (longer than usual) to Verona, Italy.
I received an email from the owners of the villa I rented asking if I was ok. Not knowing at the time what happened, I replied back yes. It wasn't until I was on the plane that I noticed a newspaper with a headline that all I could make out was Cinque Terre and 10 dead. I asked the gentleman what it said and he told me about the storm. My heart sank and went out to all the beautiful people of Cinque Terre...
