Description
Welcome to Sebastian, a small town in Willacy County Texas. Before 1906, the community was known as Stillman, but in 1912 it was renamed after Rock Island Railroad vice president, John Sebastian, who helped develop the area. Originally part of the Juan de Carricitos land grant, the townsite was later part of the famous King Ranch in southern Texas.
In 1915, during the Bandit War, raids were carried out by Mexican rebels known as the Seditionistas in Texas. On August 6, a raid party led by Luis de la Rosca decended on Sebastian. A. L. Austin and his son Charles were shot and killed that day by the raiders. Austin had served as president of the Law and Order League who, according to Federal Investigators, had ran several bad men out of the area, which made him an ideal target.
